In response to a needfor greater coding specificity, the Centers for Medicare & MedicaidServices (CMS) revised the description for place of service (POS) code 02. Theyalso created a new POS code 10 to address and provide greater specificity fortelehealth services.
Telehealth serviceswill now be distinguished as where the patient is physically locatedwhen the telehealth service is provided.
The new POS codes for telehealthservices are:
- POS 02 –Telehealth Provided Other than in Patient Home
The location where health services are providedor received through telecommunications. The patient is physically not locatedin their home when receiving these related health services via telecommunicationtechnology.
- POS 10 –Telehealth Provided in Patient Home
The location where health services are providedor received through telecommunications. The patient is physically in their home(a location other than a hospital or facility where the patient receives carein a private residence) when receiving these related health services viatelecommunications technology.
POS code 10 iseffective with dates of service on and after January 1, 2022.
TheTelehealth/Telemedicine Services payment policy will be updated to reflect thisnew POS code and available for viewing in 2022.
