Tips for medication management in a crisis

Stockpiling medications for disasters or other emergencies is not an approach we recommend. Large quantities of drugs that are stored for long periods of time can expire; others require special handling and storage. In these scenarios, the safety and effectiveness of medications can’t be assured.

To plan for the day when access to pharmacies or your doctor might be limited, try these suggestions for managing meds instead:

  1. Make a list
Write down all drugs, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and dosages you take regularly. Include contact information for your doctor and pharmacy. Store the list in a fireproof home safe, a waterproof container, or on your phone.
  2. Carry your card
With your ID card always on you, acquiring medications and gaining access to care are more efficient and timelier.
  3. Refill without waiting
Renew prescriptions and refill medications when eligible. Consider acquiring extended supplies, such as up to 90 days.
  4. Keep meds together
Store drugs in their original bottles or packages and with labels attached. Secure all bottles and packages together in a single, waterproof container.
  5. Plan for special meds
Establish a backup plan in case of power outages or evacuation for drugs that require refrigeration (have a small cooler and ice packs at the ready) or handling with electronic equipment.
  6. Share your plan
Send a disaster medication plan to your prescribing doctor. For children with prescriptions, extend that share plan with schools or daycares.

Managing ongoing care

If you work with a care manager on a chronic or complex health condition and have been displaced by a disaster or other emergency, or you expect to evacuate, contact your care manager as soon as possible. If you don’t have a care manager, call the number on the back of your member ID card for help with securing care continuity.
